6 Free Alternatives to Google Forms for Ranking Surveys
So, you’ve realized the only option for ranking on Google Forms is this terrible thing…
Not to worry, here’s a breakdown of the 6 most popular FREE survey tools you can use for your ranking project instead of Google Forms 👇👇👇
Best Free Alternatives to Google Forms for Ranking Surveys
SurveyMonkey
Typeform
OpinionX
Slido
Mentimeter
Qualtrics
Alternative 1 → SurveyMonkey
Rank order questions are only available for premium customers on SurveyMonkey. The cheapest paid plan with ranking access costs $39/month and has a limit of 1,000 participants per month.
Alternative 2 → Typeform
While Typeform does have a ranking question on its free tier, you’re only allowed 10 participants in total across all your surveys per month, which is extremely limiting. Typeform’s ranking question is pretty useless across all pricing plans — they don’t actually have any analysis features for ranked questions at all (you can’t even randomize the order ranking options appear to respondents).
Alternative 3 → OpinionX
OpinionX is a survey tool built specifically for ranking. It has 5 different ranking formats which are all available on the free tier. Teams at thousands of companies (including Google, Amazon and Microsoft) use OpinionX for their ranking surveys.
Because OpinionX was built specifically for ranking, it comes with a bunch of purpose-built features for analyzing ranked data — for example, the segmentation feature lets you recalculate your results to see how different subgroups of your respondents voted compared to your overall results.
Free Version: The free version of OpinionX gives you unlimited surveys with unlimited questions and unlimited ranking options. All question types are available and you can have up to 50 participants per survey (no monthly limits, just per project) on the free version.
Premium Tiers: OpinionX’s “Pro” tier (100 participants per survey) costs $30/month and offers extra customizations like removing OpinionX branding or setting a minimum/maximum number of votes per participant. Advanced analysis like survey branching and results segmentation comes on the “Scale” tier (1,000 participants per survey) which cost $60/month. Check out the full OpinionX pricing breakdown for more info.
Alternative 4 → Slido
Slido is an audience engagement tool for live events. It has a drag-and-drop ‘ranking poll’ feature that (even Slido themselves) recommend only using for ranking small lists, like in the screenshot below. The free tier allows up to 100 participants, after which Slido offers per-year or per-event pricing plans (no monthly option).
Alternative 5 → Mentimeter
Mentimeter is very similar to Slido but focuses on classrooms instead of conferences. Its free version has a limit of two questions per “presentation” and premium plans are charged per-year only. It also wins the award for “most clicks required to rank stuff” (arguably the worst survey design for ranking out of all 6 tools in this post).
Alternative 6 → Qualtrics
Qualtrics’ free version has a “Rank Order” question and allows for 500 participants over the lifetime of a free account. But Qualtrics is an expansive professional-grade platform — even for the most simple ranked results, it’s very easy to get lost in the complex maze of 30+ visualization options (check out that mess of a results page below, which is their *default* (!!!) view for ranking questions). If Qualtrics is like the complicated Photoshop for surveys, then OpinionX is like the easy-to-use Canva equivalent.
